Why knowing football helps

Peter is quick to downplay his own role, but he'll admit his interest in the sport is a real bonus. "Technically, a dataset can look completely fine. The checks pass, nothing's broken. But if you know football, you sometimes notice things that don't quite add up like in real life. I think that helps a little, catching the odd thing that's technically correct but doesn't make sense on the pitch."

If anything, he's more excited about a bigger shift. The hardest part of building a data-driven culture, he says, isn't the technology. It's trust. "People have to believe the numbers. And for that, everyone needs to agree on what the numbers really means. Something as simple as 'how many football players are there in Norway' doesn't have one answer unless you've defined it the same way for everyone. Get that right, and suddenly the whole organisation starts trusting the data. That shift has been the most rewarding thing to watch."

How the data gets used before (and during) a World Cup

A lot of what the platform does has nothing to do with the national team. It runs across the whole federation: ticket sales and visitor numbers, progress against strategic goals, the season's matches, referees, players, yellow and red cards. The same system that follows a nine-year-old's first organised season also follows the players now wearing the shirt at a World Cup. The national team is just one part of that, but it's the part everyone's watching right now.

Just before the tournament, the big question was a physical one. How tired are these players, really? They'd just finished a full club season and were heading somewhere hot, under pressure they'd never faced before. So the team looked at how much each player had actually been running, sprinting and working in the weeks before, pulled from their clubs and lined up in one place, defined the same way. That's what makes the insight trustworthy.

Through the tournament, the platform keeps collecting, so the picture stays current rather than a snapshot from before the players left. And it's not simple: during the matches in the US the team only uses its GPS vests in training, not in the games, so the physical data comes from several different sources, in different formats, that all have to line up into one coherent picture. That stitching is where the platform earns its place.
