Data alone wasn’t enough

The ocean is one of the most studied environments on Earth. But even with decades of data, key questions remained hard to answer.

How much are ships emitting—right now, and where? How are sea lice affecting salmon stocks this week, not last year? What trends are emerging across ecosystems, industries, and coastlines?

The challenge wasn’t a lack of data. It was turning that data into something usable. Tracking emissions meant pulling from billions of ship positions. Monitoring sea lice required stitching together scattered reports across farms and time zones. And behind each insight was a patchwork of models, sources, and formats.

To move from information to action, HUB Ocean needed a way to bring it all together. One that could handle complexity, scale with ambition, and still be open to everyone who needed it.

One platform, many possibilities

Together with HUB Ocean, we built the Ocean Data Platform—a shared digital foundation for better ocean decisions. It brings together vast and varied datasets, harmonizing them into one open, accessible system.

At its core, the platform acts as a digital twin of the world’s oceans. It connects data on shipping, emissions, marine ecosystems, and more, making it possible to explore both current conditions and long-term trends.

We implemented advanced analytics, machine learning, and modeling tools to help users not just access data, but make sense of it. From tracking greenhouse gas emissions per ship and per hour, to monitoring sea lice in aquaculture, the platform turns fragmented inputs into actionable insight.

The system is flexible, scalable, and built to grow—with architecture that allows new partners to plug in, new features to roll out, and new questions to be explored.

Turning insight into action

The Ocean Data Platform has become a global hub for ocean insight. What was once buried in separate systems is now connected, searchable, and usable—by scientists, policymakers, and industry alike.

Researchers can model future scenarios using vast sets of historical data. Regulators can track emissions across the global fleet, hour by hour. Aquaculture facilities gain real-time insight into sea lice levels, helping them take faster, smarter action to protect fish health.
